Below I have listed things that a good web designer should keep in mind in order to best serve his visitors. These will also help make your site look nicer and more professional. Hence, these are not must's, but they are highly recommended.

• Use valid HTML and CSS code
• Keep it simple
• Spell check
• Follow accessibility guidelines
• Use the "alt" attribute on all images
• Vary your text formatting
• Balance text and graphics
• Use a theme
• Maintain consistency and continuity throughout your site
• Include a "Last updated" notice
• Use black (or the like) text on a light background
• Break-up text with images or lines
• Follow copyright laws
• Be aware of browser specific content and features
